Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS), University of Minho
Head: João Carlos Sousa
ICVS presents four major investigation research domains: Surgical Sciences, Microbiology and Infection, Neurosciences, and Population Health. Such different research lines offer our microscopy facility the opportunity to routinely work in the imaging of different samples: from cell and tissues to biomaterials and microorganisms.
Our strongest fields of expertise are confocal microscopy, including mosaic imaging, FRET and FRAP analysis and co-localization studies; and also the stereology microscopy, mostly for the analysis of nervous system cell density, volumetry, neuronal branching analysis, and spine classification.
In the near future, we will upgrade one of our inverted optical microscopes (Olympus IX83) to a confocal microscope and also acquire a 2photon microscope for live animal recording.
Being part of a research institute, we are prone to innovation, offering scientific advice and tailor-made solutions in study design, development and data analysis. We also provide hands-on training sessions, so that users can autonomously operate the equipment of the microscopy facility platform.
